Primary School

Reading

At Duckmanton Primary School we strive to ensure our children value reading and can read confidently with enthusiasm.  We aim to deliver well-planned reading lessons which are challenging, enjoyable and develop the childrens’ reading skills.  These are taught explicitly in guided reading group sessions, whole class reading sessions and in 1-1 reading time, whilst also being embedded through a wide range of curricular subjects.

Well chosen, high-quality class texts are used in sessions to enhance the childrens’ reading skills and expand their vocabulary. Cross curricular links ensure the texts are meaningful, engaging and promote a love of reading.

The teaching of reading follows the Reading National Curriculum which can be found here:

Reading for pleasure

At Duckmanton Primary School we aim to ensure our children develop a love of reading and a genuine desire to read for pleasure. Books are shared to foster a curiosity and passion for reading, with high quality, well chosen- texts freely available to all pupils.

Our ‘Reading Allowed’ sessions allow pupils to relax and enjoy being read to, thus prioritising the enjoyment and pleasure which reading brings.

Accelerated Reader

‘Motivate, monitor, and manage students’ independent reading practice with Accelerated Reader and watch as students develop a true love for reading’ Renaissance Accelerated Reader.

Our Year 2-6 children have access to our Accelerated Reader library which contains a wide variety of engaging and challenging texts, to both enhance reading skills and foster a love of reading. Accelerated Reader allows children see instant small-step of progress thus boosting confidence and enthusiasm to read. After completing a book, the children take a short online quiz which assess their understanding of the book and gives instant feedback. Please see your child’s class teacher for their log in details.

Accelerated Reader can be accessed here:

How can I help my child at home?

  • Encourage a love of reading by making reading a part of daily life. Share your excitement when reading.
  • Make reading a positive experience by encouraging and praising your child when they read.
  • Read to your child as well as your child reading to you. Reading to your child will encourage their love of books and passion for reading.
  • Record in your child’s reading record when they have read at home, this gives a sense of achievement and also helps them to earn raffle tickets!
  • Praise all types of reading: books, magazines, signs, websites etc.
