Phonics Screening Check

Phonics Screening Check

The Phonics Screening Check takes place in June each year for all Year 1 pupils. It checks how well children can use their phonics knowledge to decode and read words. Children complete the check one-to-one with a familiar adult in school and read 40 words – 20 real words and 20 made-up or ‘alien’ words. The check is designed to feel like a normal phonics activity rather than a formal test.

How We Help in School

The Phonics Screening Check takes place during a set week in June. Throughout Reception and Year 1, children develop their reading skills through our Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. Children take part in daily phonics lessons, regular reading practice and frequent opportunities to revisit previously taught sounds and words. As the check approaches, children also become familiar with the types of real and ‘alien’ words they will see, helping them to feel confident and well prepared.

Helping at Home

Regular reading and phonics practice at home can make a big difference to children’s confidence. Reading your child’s Little Wandle reading book regularly and practising recently taught sounds and tricky words will help them become increasingly confident at sounding out and blending words.
