Multiplication Tables Check

Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory check taken by all Year 4 pupils in England during June each year. It is designed to check that children can quickly and accurately recall their times tables up to 12 × 12, an important skill that supports their future learning in mathematics.

The check is completed online in school and consists of 25 multiplication questions. Children have 6 seconds to answer each question, with a short pause before the next question appears. There are also three practice questions before the check begins, and the whole check usually takes less than five minutes.

There is no pass or fail mark. Each child receives a score out of 25, which helps school understand how confidently they can recall their multiplication facts and identify where any further support may be helpful.

Children complete the MTC during a two-week window in June. Throughout Year 4, we help children build confidence and fluency with their multiplication tables through regular practice in lessons, our Times Table Songs and the Mastering Number programme. These approaches give children frequent opportunities to practise, recall and apply their multiplication facts so that they feel confident and well prepared for the check.

Helping at Home

Regular, short practice at home can make a big difference to children’s confidence and speed with their times tables. Children can practise using our Times Table Songs, available on the school website, as well as games and activities online. Just a few minutes of practice each day can help to make multiplication facts quick and automatic.
